Hourly rate or fixed price?

Electricians charge in two ways, and knowing which applies to your job stops a lot of confusion. Hourly rates suit fault-finding and small jobs where nobody knows what's wrong until the covers come off — a tripping circuit, a dead socket, a switch that crackles. Fixed prices suit defined jobs where the scope is clear before anyone picks up a screwdriver: a consumer unit change, an EICR, a full rewire, an EV charger on the drive.

We quote fixed prices wherever the job can be defined, because it puts the risk on us rather than you. If a fuse board change takes longer than expected, that's our problem, not a bigger bill.

Our hourly rate in 2026

For time-based work we charge around £60 for the first hour, then around £30 per additional half hour. The first hour costs more because it carries the travel, the van and the test equipment — after that you're just paying for time on the job. Most small domestic jobs in Blackpool are done inside the first hour or two: swapping a damaged socket, replacing a light switch, tracing why the kitchen circuit keeps tripping.

What makes a job cost more

Two identical-sounding jobs can carry different prices. The usual reasons:

• Access: boarded lofts, tiled walls, laminate flooring and fitted kitchens all add time before the electrical work even starts.
• Old wiring: if there's nothing sound to connect to, a "quick socket" becomes a longer job. Common in Blackpool's older terraces.
• Parking: it sounds daft, but central Blackpool parking is a genuine line on the clock — permit zones and pay-and-display near the promenade eat into the first hour.
• Making good: chasing cables into walls means plaster repairs. We keep chases tidy, but redecorating is usually down to you.

How to get an accurate quote

For most jobs we can give a free verbal quote from a couple of photos: one of your fuse board with the cover open is worth a hundred words, plus one of the area where you want the work. Do you charge a callout fee?

No separate callout fee during normal hours — the first-hour rate covers getting to you. We work Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, with late-night emergency cover for the jobs that can't wait until morning. Emergency work is priced when you call, before we set off, so there's no mystery number on the invoice.

Red flags on a cheap quote

• No registration body mentioned — ask for a NAPIT or NICEIC number and check it.
• No mention of certification or testing on notifiable work like fuse board changes.
• A rewire price given without ever seeing the property.
• Cash only, no paperwork, no fixed scope in writing.
• No insurance — we carry £2M public liability, and any electrician should be happy to show you theirs.

A quote that's hundreds cheaper than everyone else's usually has something missing — the certificate, the insurance or half the job. Paying twice is the expensive way to save money.
