Faults we track down

Some electrical faults announce themselves; others hide for weeks. Blackpool's coastal housing stock adds its own patterns too — salty, damp air finds its way into outdoor fittings, junction boxes and older wiring, especially near the seafront. Faults we trace every week include:

  • RCDs or RCBOs that keep tripping — constantly or seemingly at random
  • Dead circuits — one room, one floor or a bank of sockets with no power
  • Buzzing, crackling or warm sockets and switches
  • Intermittent power loss that comes and goes
  • Nuisance tripping when it rains — a classic damp-related fault

How we find the fault

Fault finding is a process of elimination done methodically, not by guesswork or swapping parts on spec. We isolate the affected circuit, then split it into sections and test each one until the fault is cornered.

Insulation resistance readings tell us whether a cable's insulation has broken down — often the culprit behind damp-related tripping — while continuity tests pick up loose connections and broken conductors. Once found, we explain the fault in plain English and agree the repair cost before going any further.

When a fault is an emergency

A burning smell, scorch marks around a socket or switch, sparking, or a whole property with no power shouldn't wait for a routine appointment. Switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit if it's safe to do so and call us on 01253 835566 — we offer late-night emergency callouts across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.

Honest pricing, agreed up front

Fault finding is £60 for the first hour, then £30 per additional half hour — and we tell you before the clock runs on, not after. If the repair needs parts, we quote them before fitting anything, so the final bill is never a surprise.

Our fault-finding process

1

Talk it through

We ask what trips, when it started and what changed — half the diagnosis often happens on the phone.

2

Isolate & inspect

We safely isolate the affected circuit and inspect the consumer unit, accessories and likely trouble spots.

3

Test & narrow down

Splitting the circuit and taking insulation resistance readings corners the fault section by section.

4

Repair & prove it

We agree the repair cost, fix the fault and re-test the circuit to prove it's holding.

FAQ

How long does electrical fault finding take?

Plenty of faults are found within the first hour — a faulty appliance or a single loose connection can be quick. Intermittent faults or damage buried in walls take longer, and we'll always tell you where we're up to before carrying on.

Do you charge if you can't find the fault?

Rarely, an intermittent fault won't show itself on the day. You pay for the diagnostic time spent and keep the results — we'll set out exactly what we've ruled out and agree the next step rather than guessing at parts.

Why does my RCD trip at night?

Night-time tripping usually points to a timed or cyclic load — immersion heaters, storage heaters, a fridge-freezer on a defrost cycle — or condensation forming in an outdoor fitting as the temperature drops. Insulation resistance testing narrows it down quickly.

Should I keep resetting a tripping RCD?

Trying it once or twice to see if it holds is fine. If it keeps tripping, stop — it's disconnecting a genuine fault. Unplug appliances on that circuit, leave the RCD off and give us a call.
