Why mains-powered, interlinked alarms?
BS 5839-6 — the British Standard covering fire detection in homes — generally points towards mains-powered alarms with battery back-up for most dwellings, rather than standalone battery units. A mains alarm can't quietly die in a drawer after its battery gets borrowed for the TV remote.
Interlinking means that when one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the property sounds together. In a three-storey terrace or a holiday flat, that's the difference between hearing an alarm two floors away and sleeping through it.
Where running new cable isn't practical, sealed 10-year battery alarms with wireless interlinking are a strong alternative — no redecorating, and no battery changes for the life of the alarm.
Smoke alarm rules for landlords
In England, private rented homes must have at least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room used as living accommodation that contains a fixed combustion appliance (gas cookers excepted). Alarms must be repaired or replaced promptly once a tenant reports a fault.
The rules don't insist on mains-powered alarms, but many landlords choose hardwired or sealed 10-year units so there's no battery for anyone to remove. We fit alarms across rental properties in Blackpool, Cleveleys and Fleetwood and leave paperwork for your records.
Where should alarms go?
As a rule of thumb: smoke alarms on the ceiling of the hallway and every landing, a heat alarm rather than a smoke alarm in the kitchen, and a CO alarm in any room with a boiler, log burner or gas fire.

Are battery smoke alarms good enough?
They're better than nothing, but 9V battery units are easy to silence and fail once the battery dies. Mains-powered alarms with battery back-up — or sealed 10-year battery alarms — are far more dependable, and are what BS 5839-6 points towards for homes.
How many smoke alarms do I need?
At least one on every storey used as living accommodation — typically the hallway and each landing. Larger homes, HMOs and holiday lets usually justify more. We'll advise on sensible coverage when we visit.
Do my smoke alarms need to be interlinked?
New-build homes and material alterations require interlinked alarms under building regulations. In an existing home it isn't always compulsory, but it's a worthwhile upgrade — when one alarm sounds, they all do.
How long do smoke alarms last?
Around ten years — there's a replace-by date printed on the unit. After that the sensor degrades even if the test button still bleeps, so the whole alarm should be replaced, not just the battery.
Where should a carbon monoxide alarm go?
In any room with a fixed combustion appliance — boiler, gas fire or log burner. Follow the manufacturer's positioning guidance: typically at head height, between one and three metres from the appliance.
