Are exposed cables dangerous?
Short answer: it depends entirely on what's exposed. Outer sheath nicked? Annoying. Copper conductors showing? Stop using the circuit. Here's the proper breakdown.
Levels of 'exposed'
1. Outer grey/white sheath cut — the inner cores (brown/blue/green-yellow) are still insulated. Not immediately dangerous, but the cable is no longer mechanically protected. Replace or sleeve properly.
2. Inner core insulation damaged — you can see the colour of the insulation worn or split. Shock and short-circuit risk. Isolate the circuit until it's repaired.
3. Bare copper visible — full hazard. Switch off at the consumer unit and don't reset until an electrician has seen it.

Making it safe right now
- Identify the circuit and switch off the relevant breaker.
- If unsure, switch off the main isolator at the consumer unit.
- Don't try to tape bare copper back together — even good electrical tape isn't a permanent repair.
- Keep pets and children clear and call an electrician.
Why an RCD isn't an excuse
Modern RCDs trip in milliseconds on an earth fault — that's brilliant, but it's a last line of defence, not a substitute for repair. If a cable has failed once, it'll fail again. Get it fixed.
