10 reasons your lights flicker

Flickering lights look harmless but can hint at anything from a tired LED driver to a loose neutral that's a genuine fire risk. Here's the ranked list we work through on Blackpool callouts.

1. Cheap or incompatible LED bulbs

Bargain-bin LEDs and old dimmer switches don't get on. If flicker started after a bulb swap, try a dimmable branded LED rated for your switch.

2. A failing dimmer switch

Triac dimmers wear out. If every bulb flickers regardless of brand, the dimmer is the suspect.

3. Loose bulb in the holder

Sounds obvious — and it's our #1 "called out for nothing" reason. Power off, give the bulb a firm quarter-turn.

4. High-draw appliance on the same circuit

Kettle kicks in, lights dip. Usually fine, but persistent dimming means the circuit is undersized or overloaded.

5. Loose wiring at the light fitting

Vibration from doors slamming or upstairs traffic can shake old terminals loose. This needs an electrician — loose connections heat up.

6. Loose neutral in the consumer unit

If lights flicker across multiple rooms simultaneously, suspect the consumer unit. Switch the main isolator off and call us — this is the dangerous one.

7. Faulty light switch

Old plastic switches develop carbon tracking on the contacts. A £6 part fixes it.

8. Voltage fluctuations from the grid

If your neighbours see the same blink at the same time, it's a network issue — report it to Electricity North West on 105.

9. Worn out transformer (low-voltage downlights)

Old 12V halogen transformers buzz and flicker as they fail. Swap the whole fitting for an integrated LED downlight — better, cooler, cheaper to run.

10. Service cable or meter tail issue

Rare, but serious. If the whole house dims when the shower runs, the incoming supply or meter tails may be undersized. EICR will flag it.

When to stop ignoring it

Any flicker affecting multiple rooms, or accompanied by a burning smell or warm switch plate, is a stop-and-call situation. We cover Blackpool, Lytham, Cleveleys and Fleetwood — usually same day.
