Water in a light fitting
Water pouring through a ceiling light is one of the few household electrical situations where minutes genuinely matter. Don't panic — but do these things in this exact order, and don't skip the last one.
1. Kill the lighting circuit now
Go to the consumer unit and switch off the breaker for the lighting circuit — usually labelled "lights", "lighting up" or "lighting down". Can't tell which is which, or the labels are missing? Switch off the main switch and cut power to the whole house. Losing the freezer for an hour is nothing against the alternative. 2. Hands off — and no buckets until the power's dead
While the circuit is live, water on the fitting can make the whole assembly live, and a steady stream can conduct. Don't touch the fitting, don't operate the light switch, and don't stand underneath it positioning containers. Once the circuit is off, then put a bucket down, move electronics clear and protect the carpet.
3. Stop the water at its source
Burst pipe or a steady leak: close the main stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink. Overflowing bath or a failed washing machine hose: deal with the appliance. Roof leak: containment is about all you can do mid-storm — the flat roofs over Blackpool bay windows and back extensions take a hammering when rain comes in sideways off the Irish Sea, and a ceiling rose directly below one is a leak's favourite exit.
Why it stays dangerous after it dries
This is the part people underestimate. Once the dripping stops and the ceiling feels dry, the temptation is to flick the lights back on and move on. Two problems:
- Tracking — leak water rarely arrives clean. It carries plaster dust, salts and grime that stay behind as a faintly conductive film across terminals and lamp holders, letting current creep where it shouldn't. That's a slow-burn fire risk, not a one-day problem.
- Corrosion — moisture that got inside terminals, junction boxes and cable runs keeps eating at copper and steel long after the surface looks dry, storing up loose-connection faults for months down the line.
Water also travels. What escaped through one downlight has often run along the cables and pooled in junction boxes you can't see. A dry fitting tells you nothing about the joists above it.
What we check before re-energising
On a water-damage callout we isolate, then test rather than guess: insulation-resistance readings across the affected circuit, a physical inspection of every fitting, rose and junction box in the wet zone, and a check that the RCD still does its job. Anything contaminated gets dried, cleaned and retested — or replaced. Only when the numbers are right does the circuit go back on.
How long until the lights can go back on?
It depends on how much water got in and where it went. A brief drip onto one sealed fitting can sometimes be inspected, dried and retested the same day. A soaked ceiling void after a burst pipe can need days of drying — a dehumidifier in the room genuinely speeds this up — before insulation readings come back to a safe level. The useful middle ground: we can often disconnect and isolate just the affected fitting or section, test the rest of the circuit, and give you working lights everywhere else while the wet zone dries out properly. You shouldn't have to live by torchlight all week.
A note for your insurance claim
Photograph the ceiling, the fitting and the source of the leak before anything is repaired, and keep any fittings we replace. Our test results and invoice document the electrical damage properly — insurers deal with escape-of-water claims far faster when the electrical side is evidenced rather than described.
