Why ventilation matters on the coast

Types of extractor fan
The right fan depends on the room, the duct run and how the space gets used:

Fans and bathroom zones
Bathrooms are divided into zones around the bath and shower, and a fan installed within those zones needs a suitable IP rating for its location — with SELV (safety extra-low voltage) fans used where the zone calls for them. It's one reason fan installation is a job for an electrician rather than a general handyman.
What installation involves
For a like-for-like replacement we isolate the circuit, swap the fan and test — usually under an hour. A new installation adds cutting the opening, running ducting to an outside grille, and wiring the fan to the lighting circuit or its own switched supply, with an isolator so it can be serviced safely.
Either way we make good around the fan, clear up after ourselves and leave it running as it should.

Do I need an extractor fan in my bathroom?
If the bathroom has no openable window, building regulations expect mechanical ventilation — and even with one, a fan clears steam far faster than a draughty window in February. If you're fighting condensation or mould, a decent fan is usually the first fix.
Can you fit a quieter fan?
Yes — modern low-noise axial fans and loft-mounted inline fans are dramatically quieter than older units. If your current fan drones, a quiet replacement is often a same-visit swap.
What's the difference between a timer fan and a humidistat fan?
A timer fan runs on for a set period after the light goes off; a humidistat fan measures moisture in the air and switches itself on when humidity rises. Humidistat models suit lets and family bathrooms where nobody remembers the fan.
Why isn't my extractor fan clearing the steam?
Usual suspects: a clogged grille, flattened or kinked ducting, or a fan that's too small for the room. We can check the airflow and either revive the existing fan or fit the right size replacement.
