What a hot tub actually needs
A full-size hot tub draws a serious, sustained load — typically a dedicated 32-amp supply — so it needs its own circuit run straight from the consumer unit, not a spur off the nearest socket. Done properly, the installation includes:
- A dedicated circuit from the consumer unit
- Correctly sized SWA armoured cable, clipped, ducted or buried
- 30mA RCD protection covering the whole circuit
- An IP-rated outdoor connection with weatherproof glands
- A rotary isolator mounted within sight of the tub
Why not just use an extension lead?
It's the most common shortcut we're asked to undo. A domestic extension lead outdoors, feeding a tub full of water and people, is a genuinely bad combination — leads overheat under sustained load, connections end up sitting in the wet, and there's often no RCD protection at all. Even 13-amp plug-and-play tubs deserve a proper RCD-protected outdoor socket rather than a lead trailed through the kitchen window.
Installation day
Most hot tub supplies go in within a day. We run the SWA cable from the consumer unit along the agreed route, fit the rotary isolator at the tub position, drive the earth rod, make the final connection and test the complete circuit before certifying it.
Tub not arrived yet? We can install everything up to the isolator and come back to make the final connection once it's delivered — we do this regularly in gardens from Poulton-le-Fylde to Lytham St Annes.
Working with your tub supplier
Your hot tub supplier handles the tub itself — delivery, filling, chemicals and commissioning — but nearly all of them require a suitable electrical supply to be in place first, installed by a qualified electrician. We're happy to work from your supplier's electrical specification and time our visit around your delivery date.

FAQ
Can a hot tub run off a 13A plug?
Some can — smaller plug-and-play models are designed for a standard 13-amp supply and are fine on a suitable RCD-protected outdoor socket. Full-size tubs draw far more and need a dedicated 32-amp supply. Check your tub's specification before delivery day, and send it to us if you're unsure.
How far from the house can the hot tub be?
Further than most gardens allow — the cable is simply sized for the run so voltage drop stays within limits. Longer runs cost more in cable and groundwork, which we quote per metre before starting.
Does a hot tub need an earth rod?
In many outdoor installations, yes — an earth rod gives the tub its own connection to earth, which can be safer than extending the house's earthing arrangement into the garden. It's included in our standard hot tub supply price.
Do I need to tell my insurer or building control?
The electrical side is taken care of — a new dedicated circuit is notifiable in England, and as NAPIT registered electricians we self-certify the work, so you receive the certificate and building regulations notification. It's also worth a quick call to your home insurer to let them know you've added a hot tub, as policies vary.
