Burning smell from a socket? What to do immediately

Do this first — in order

1. Switch off the circuit at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely — don't touch the affected socket or switch.
2. Unplug everything from that socket and nearby outlets on the same wall.
3. Don't use the fitting again — tape over the switch or socket faceplate so nobody turns it back on.
4. Call an emergency electrician if the smell persists, you see scorch marks, or the faceplate feels warm.

What causes a burning smell?

The smell is usually overheated plastic on the socket faceplate, the cable insulation behind it, or the connections inside the back box. Common causes we see across Blackpool include:

• Loose terminals — vibration from passing trams and decades of use loosen screws in older properties near Central and Layton.
• Overloaded sockets — too many appliances on one outlet, especially in holiday lets with extension leads daisy-chained.
• Failed appliances — a dying kettle or tumble dryer can push heat back into the socket.
• Damaged cables — rodent damage in loft spaces and scuffed cables behind skirting are more common than people think. See exposed cables guidance.
• Aging accessories — brown Bakelite switches and unshielded metal-clad sockets in pre-1970s housing stock can fail without warning.

Scorched or discoloured outlets

Brown or black marks around the pins, a melted plastic smell that won't clear, or a socket that's warm to the touch all mean the connection has already arced. Don't reset the breaker and hope for the best — the damage is inside the wall and needs replacing properly.

When to call immediately

Treat it as an emergency and call our late-night line if:

• The smell returns after switching off at the consumer unit
• Multiple sockets on the same circuit smell hot
• You hear crackling or buzzing from the fitting
• The RCD won't reset after one attempt
• Anyone in the property feels unwell (carbon from arcing can be harmful in enclosed rooms)

What we do on arrival

We isolate the circuit, remove the faceplate, inspect the terminations and cable condition, and replace any damaged accessories. If the wiring behind the wall is heat-damaged, we'll quote for a proper repair — not a bodge with a new faceplate over burnt cable.
